When it’s a display unit! Many bookcase designs are created purely for storing and organising a book collection, however, as they come in a diverse range of styles and sizes, they can be easily put to other uses. For example, in a kitchen, a bookcase becomes a clean, fresh storage space for your many cooking implements, herbs and spices. In a lounge, they can be used to display vases, picture frames and other memorabilia, or in a hallway, somewhere to place a lamp, or indeed, your telephone.
For me, the word bookcase has become a general term used to describe any piece of furniture that has shelves, a back and sides, but is open at the front – when clearly this versatile piece of furniture can be put to many uses.
Take a low two shelf design, such as the Mobel Oak Low Bookcase, or the dark wood bookcase equivalent, the Kudos Low Bookcase, both of these designs exude a strong contemporary furniture theme. Having two large shelves they are ideally suited for providing you with a great looking display unit that could also double up as a lamp table.
Similarly, the painted bookcase design of the Hampton Large 2 Drawer Bookcase creates an impressive central feature in any room, providing practical hidden storage for a number of small items, and somewhere to hide away your oddments.
Some bookcases also have an inbuilt cupboard space. For example the Kudos Large Bookcase with Cupboard, this dark wood furniture piece, offers you ample storage space to tidy away any clutter, such as board games, magazines or jigsaw puzzles.
So, when is a bookcase not a bookcase? The choice is yours!
